a strong focus on organic materials—embracing imperfections,  creating a space that feels worldly and well travelled with loads of layers, textures and antiques.

From the moment you walk through the door you’re surrounded by a space that just feels incredibly thoughtful and well executed. The living room features wall to wall windows that showcase the most incredible desert sunsets you could imagine. A big worn in supple leather sofa grounds the room flanked by cozy structured boucle armchairs. One very unique design element in this living room is the brick fireplace with the steel hood that is original to the home—designed and hand built by the original homeowners. Kelsey and Dustin added this beautiful imperfect hand formed tile, just adding an other textural element to the room. A projector screen pulls down for movie nights and overall the room just feels warm, inviting and so relaxing. One other element to note is the great use of scale throughout the entire property. I love this oversized vase and table lamp, juxtaposed with this more modern feeling low glass coffee table.

In the kitchen, the homeowners scored this absolutely incredible one of a kind limestone sink—on craigslist. All of the countertops were created with organic lime plaster making for a very unique, organic feel. Going with such a delicate countertop in a short term rental just requires a bit of additional communication with guests. These counters require a bit more care and diligence to keep them well maintained—and I think property owners shouldn’t be afraid to do bold and interesting material applications in their space. I think that when you fill your property with high quality items and materials that may need special care—people will respect it. It’s all to common that property owners shy away from layering in those special touches for fear of things being damaged—but I truly believe that when you position your property as a luxury stay, you will attract visitors that see the value in your space and have a level of respect for those special touches. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could need for making meals at home with the beautiful vintage cutting boards, and high end cooking utensils.

The dining room features a wood harvest table painted out white with a long bench and black modern windsor style chairs. There’s enough space for a large party making this a great destination for a big family or a group of friends.

The property features two bedrooms with queen beds with enough room for 4 guests. A great way Kelsey and Dustin made the bedrooms feel extra warm and tonal was by using lime wash paint throughout. The bedrooms both feature so many varying textures from soft linen sheets to jute and sisal rugs, to hand woven pouffs, aged worn woods, honestly they did such an impeccable job marrying materials throughout — as a designer myself it was such a treat to see and experience in real life.

The major focal point in the first bedroom is this hand made wood divider they’ve used to separate this room into a space for meditation and meeting and a space for rest. This was the perfect opportunity for them to showcase all of the impeccably curated vintage items.

I think another really key takeaway from this property is the ability to effortlessly mix high and low in a way that makes the overall feel really high end. The highly curated selection of antiques (books, sculptures, baskets and vases) combined with some off the shelf basics like linen drapery from Zara home —create a space that feels luxe everywhere while still offering some savings in the decor. One other decorating trick I absolutely love in this space is the incorporation of natural elements. Throughout the space you’ll find dried flowers and branches, tumbleweeds and sticks, these are literally free but add SO much depth, dimension and character to the space. Especially for visitors coming from out of town, all of these natural elements are so foreign and interesting to be surrounded by and just make it feel like a real desert retreat.

In our humble opinion, every short term rental NEEDS a bathtub. When we are going away we want to relax, read a book, drink some wine, and soak. The master bedroom in the beach house features a stunning fully loaded ensuite washroom with a shower and a freestanding soaker tub. We love the addition of the bathtub tray— the perfect spot to rest your glass.

The second bedroom also combines a variety of interesting textures from the plush souk rug underfoot to the travertine table lamps and the oversized vintage wood closet.

That brings me to, the washroom of my literal dreams. Firstly, I’ll start by saying that I think all short term rentals need a bathtub. I am here for the baths.. Staying at a short term rental is an experience and having the option of a tub is somethig people want on vacation. This bathrooms checks all the boxes for me. I love the two tone zellige floors, the curved brass shower head and matching plumbing fixtures, I love the depth of the tub- it’s one you can really sink into- and the tub tray is the perfect perch for a book and a glass of wine. The bathroom features a natural bowl sink onto of a plastered vanity- carrying over the plaster theme from the kitchen. A lovely couple lovely touches in here are the branded amenities and the introduction of natural elements like lavender and eucalyptus.
